It's the Act 2 song "To Break in a Glove" that really shows the father dealing with his grief. Larry Murphy, played by John Hemphill, was an unexpectedly tear-inducing performance of the night. She conveys raw emotion through shouts and sobs on stage, and beautifully reflects a mother's unconditional love and strength in her solo "So Big/So Small." Throughout the show, there is a barrier between Heidi and Evan, only finally broken through in an emotional Act 2 that put Sherman's acting chops on full display. As Heidi, Sherman exemplifies an overworked single parent who despite her best efforts is completely out of sync with her son. ![]() Its music comes from songwriter duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who have written award-winning songs for movies including "La La Land" and "The Greatest Showman." The contemporary pop-rock score is both catchy and heartbreaking.Ī standout performance came from Jessica E. "Dear Evan Hansen" first premiered on Broadway in 2016, and since has received critical acclaim. But as he grows close to the Murphy family, forming the kinds of personal connections he has been yearning for, Evan's elaborate lie spirals out of control. With intentions of helping a grieving family, Evan leans into the lie. The show's plot follows Evan Hansen ( Stephen Christopher Anthony), an anxiety-ridden high school senior, who was tasked by his therapist to write letters to himself in an effort to boost his self-confidence. After classmate Connor Murphy ( Nikhil Saboo) dies by suicide, one of Evan's letters falls into the hands of Connor's parents, who mistakenly believe Evan and Connor were close friends.
